In February 2018, with the support and guidance of UNSW Global, the China-Australia (UF) course of the High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University Jiangning Campus added the core UF Design Stream besides the two major streams of business and science.
UF Design Stream has its core courses delivered by teachers evaluated by the Design Department of the UNSW Foundation College, an iconic university in Australia, and are fully guided and supported by resources from the School of Architecture and the School of Art and Design of UNSW;
- Course Contents
The Design Stream is divided into two parts: learning the basic knowledge of design and design and creation. The design and creation course are divided into five modules, and students must complete five works by hands-on operation.
One is to learn the basics of design. For example: the evolution and evolutionary history of design, the styles of internationally renowned design masters, life introductions, etc. The theoretical basis of the design profession includes: design history, design schools, representative figures, design methods, etc. It provides theoretical foundation for students who are about to enter the field of design, and provides theoretical support for practical links.
The second is design creation. Students are encouraged to use a variety of materials and methods to visualize several design concepts in 2D and 3D. The study of this course not only exercises students’ hands-on ability, but also cultivates and shapes students’ creative thinking, spatial imagination and understanding of design materials more openly.
Among them, in the related courses of the second category of design and creation, students need to complete five modules and complete five works by hands-on operation. Transition from flat and abstract design to three-dimensional space design, then into functional design, and finally sublime into a design with practical and commercial value. The production of the five works not only exercises the students’ hands-on production ability, creativity, and spatial imagination, but also lays a good theoretical and operational foundation for the students to enter the university. At the same time, it will pave the way for students to choose their university majors. Whether students choose to engage in architectural design, graphic design, or industrial design in the future, they can find corresponding learning methods and inspiration from these five works.

- Why study Design?
In 21st century, critical and creative thinking is crucial. The trend of studying abroad in the past few years has led to many people returning to China to engage in finance, commerce, marketing, and other industries. Now that these industries are increasingly saturated, what direction will China’s market tilt in the future?
As time goes the most valued industries are those who have creativity. So where is China heading? The answer is obvious. The country’s future industrial development requires creative talents as support and motivation. It is foreseeable that there will be many emerging talent market vacancies in China’s future economic development, such as industrial designers, product designers, visual designers, jewelry designers, fashion designers, environmental protection designers, landscape designers. Designers and other high-paying jobs. At that time, it was time for the children who graduated from our design class to show their talents.
In the future, even right now, they will be the professional talents and in-demand talents that this innovative market desires. Because this is the inevitable result of the development trend of the world.
