A feeling of excitement spread as the news was received. Yuncheng Lu explains why he was able to achieve this outstanding result!
I feel a great honor to be placed in the top two percent of the world in the Euclid Mathematics Contest. I really love Mathematics because when I solve problems they open up my mind and I feel a sense of accomplishment through the independent thinking. During the winter vacation, I studied a higher level of Calculus. I can’t resist the charm and challenge of this worldwide math contest which only increases my enthusiasm and interest for math. In addition, the difficulty of the problems is gradual which helped me to realize that Mathematics is not just made up of fragmented formulas and this enables people to explore the unknown and endless world of Mathematics.
The Euclid Mathematics Contest is mainly offered to second year high school students (Canada’s 11th grade). The main contents of the exam include algebra (function, triangle, permutation, combination), plane combination, analytical geometry, etc. Apart from the result, the contest is focused more on the problem-solving skills of the students. A score of forty is a pass and because of the excellent reputation and tradition of the University of Waterloo in the field of Mathematics and the rigor and professionalism of the Euclid Mathematics Contest, it has been widely recognized by the University of Canada and is known as the “Mathematics TOEFL”.
There were 21,072 registered examinees in the 2017 Euclid Mathematics Contest. Yuncheng Lu achieved a score of 84 points and ranked in the top 2% of the world. This was a great achievement!
