Usually refers to Public Forum Debate. All of the top debate competitions in the United States use this debate format, such as: Stanford Invitational, Harvard Debate, Yale Invitational and Columbia Invitational.
American debates have two teams of two debating. Before each round of debate, debaters on both sides choose a position or order of speaking by tossing a coin. If the winner chooses a position, the loser can decide to speak first or last. Each round takes about 45 minutes. American debate topics are updated monthly. Debaters need to find evidence and arguments to support the pros and cons before the game.
This is a form of debate based on the spirit of academic and scientific research, which can be seen for the first time in the debate. Whether it is social science, economics or scientific debates, they are all unfamiliar fields to debaters. Therefore, rather than playing on the spot, American debates pay more attention to pre-match preparations. Every time, our literature teacher Mr. Christopher will first organize the members of the debate club to conduct detailed analysis and research study on the debate topic. Next, he will guide the members to write the debate draft, and lead the members to conduct group exercises and mock debates.
On the day of the competition, the members will come to the school together, set up the venue under the guidance of Mr. Christopher, and play the competition.
